A satellite View of Elk Hills Oil Field near Bakersfield California. This EO-1 satellite image also has environmental significance. It shows the markings saturating the hills of southern California’s Coast ranges at the Elk Hills oil field, which first started producing in 1912 and is still active. It has yielded more than 1.3 billion barrels of oil and some natural gas. For many years it was the kingpin of the Naval Petroleum Reserve before being sold to Occidental Petroleum Co. in 1997. The larger views will reveal the intensity of the well spacing.
